Attachment Style and Reality-Testing Impairment Among Patients with Schizophrenia: A Descriptive Correlational Study

Background: Insecure attachment styles are an area of research that is currently receiving much attention because it has important role in developing many psychological disorders and might have effect on individual's perception his outer reality. In this respect, assessment of attachment among patients with schizophrenia can be informative indicating how well the patients perceive their reality accurately. Aim: This study aimed to determine the style and reality testing impairment schizophrenia. As well, investigate relationship between them those patients. Setting: was conducted at El-Maamoura hospital for Psychiatric Medicine Alexandria. Subjects: A representative sample 200 randomly recruited patients were subjects present study. Tools: Socio-Demographic and Clinical Data Sheet, Bell Reality Testing Inventory (BRTI), The Psychosis Attachment Measure (PAM). Results: showed 54.5% studied exhibited an avoidant who anxious constitute 40%. Moreover, 60% had a moderate level reality-testing and 36.5% severe impairment. statistically significant positive correlation between psychotic attachment found (r=0.394, p=0.000). More specifically, there avoidant and the three domains as total scores (r= 0.577, 0.179, 0.278, 0.501 respectively, Meanwhile, correlation between only Hallucinations & Delusions domain of (r =0.291, Conclusion: It concluded almost all patients exhibit insecure styles, being the most prevalent, usually majority cases. On other hand, great majority these same reflected its three domains: distortion, uncertainty perception, hallucinations delusions. Evidence of impairment, (both sub total domains) frequently there. Recommendations: Building up a secure, structured, consistent environment for modify their insecure hope become more reality-oriented.
